Redhat Enterprise Linux 4, CentOS 4 dan Scientific Linux 4 Mendekati EOL

Red Hat baru-baru ini mengeluarkan pengumuman untuk mengingatkan bahwa seri-seri pada versi 4 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) akan mencapai akhir masa hidup regularnya pada akhir februari 2012. Pelanggan reguler distribusi yang februari nanti berumur 7 tahun ini tidak akan mendapat update setelah waktu tersebut. Red Hat Menyarankan untuk berpindah ke versi 5 atau 6 dari distribusi ini, RHEL 6 akan dimaintain sampai akhir November 2017. Apabila pengguna masih membutuhkan RHEL 4, anda bisa mendapat tambahan dukungan dari Red Hat selama tiga tahun dengan skema Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS).

Proyek yang mengembangan sistem operasi enterprise bebas, berbasis kode sumber Red hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS dan Scientific Linux (SL) juga mengumumkan bahwa distribusi berbasis RHEL 4 milik mereka juga akan mengakhiri masa hidupnya tiga bjulan kedepan. Proyek CentOS juga menjelaskan bahwa Red Hat tidak merilis ke publik kode sumber untuk update ELS sehingga tidak mungkin untuk melanjutkan dukungan untuk versi ini.

Urs Beyerle merilis versi terbaru dari edisi “Live CD/DVD” Scientific Linux, distribusi yang dikembangkan dari paket sumber Red Hat Enterprise Linux ditambah aplikasi ekstra yang digunakan di lingkungan akademis:

Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD 5.5 has been released for i386 and x86_64. Features: live CD can be installed to local hard disk; live CD runs from USB key; changes can be stored persistently on an external device; live CD can be mounted over NFS (diskless client). Rilis Scientific Linux 5.5

Troy Dawson mengumumkan ketersediaan Scientific Linux 5.5, varian Red Hat Enterprise linux yang dikompilasi dari source code RHEL dan diberi tambahan paket piranti lunak ekstra, driver hardware dan fitur khusus lainnya:

Scientific Linux 5.5 has been released for both i386 and x86_64 architectures. We have added gnuplot 4.2 as well as the iwlwifi 6000 ucode (firmware). The upstream vendor has also added FreeRADIUS 2 and PostgreSQL 8.4, as well as updated OpenOffice.org to 3.1.1. Scientific Linux release 5.5 is based on the rebuilding of RPMs out of SRPMs from Enterprise 5 Server and Client, including Update 5. It also has all errata and bug fixes up until the morning of May 18, 2010.

End of Life Scientific Linux 3

Pengembang Scientific Linux mengumumkan End Of Life Scientific Linux 3 pada tanggal 10 oktober 2010 (10/10/10). Hal ini berarti tidak ada errata keamanan, penambahan fitur dan perbaikan bug setelah tanggal tersebut. Seluruh distribusi Scientific Linux 3 akan dipindah ke area obsolete milik Scientific Linux 3. Hal ini sejalan dengan End of life Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 yang merupakan upstream dari Scientific Linux. CentOS 3 yang juga menggunakan RHEL 3 sebagai dasar pengembangan juga telah mengumumkan masa End of life

Rilis Scientific Linux 5.4

Troy Dawson mengumumkan rilis Scientific Linux 5.4, distribusi turunan yang dikompilasi dari kode sumber distro Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 ditambah paket-paket ekstra saintifik, file systems dan software lainnya:

Scientific Linux 5.4 has been released for both i386 and x86_64 architecture. There are packages that we used to have to add to Scientific Linux, that are now in Enterprise 5, and so we do not have to add them ourselves. FUSE, and its kernel modules, are now provided by the upstream vendor. The Atheros wireless chipset is now supported by the upstream vendor. We have added the iwlwifi 5150 ucode (firmware), as well as updated the 3945, 4945, and 5000 ucode. Lua has been also been added to the release. Scientific Linux release 5.4 is based on the rebuilding of RPMs out of SRPMs from Enterprise 5 Server and Client, it also has all errata and bug fixes up until November 1, 2009.
