The Frugalware Developer Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Frugalware 1.3pre2, the second technical preview of the upcoming 1.3 stable release. Here are some of the major improvements and changes since 1.3pre1: the monolithic configuration of X.Org is now split to the xorg.conf.d directory (you can still use the monolithic config, but the config files in the new directory have priority); updated image libraries – libjpeg 8 and libpng 1.4; while adding support for these new libraries, we touched 1,500+ packages, doing various minor fixes and improvements; package updates: Linux kernel 2.6.34, KDE SC 4.4.4, Mozilla Firefox 3.6.4, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1.

Here are some of the major improvements and changes since 1.2: for the first time in the history of Frugalware Linux, we’re offering an official graphical ‘netinstall’ image, search for the ‘-gui’ suffix on the FTP mirrors; this time we’ve verified that no workaround is needed to install this release in VMware and because of this, the relevant note is removed from the documentation; package updates: Linux kernel 2.6.33, GNOME 2.30, KDE 4.4.2, updated all the E17 packages (version 0.9.9.063); more than 1,000 package updates; exactly 100 new packages.

If you didn’t follow the changes during the pre-releases, here are the most important changes since 1.1: up to date packages – Linux kernel 2.6.32.8, GNU C library 2.11.1, X.Org 7.5, GNOME 2.28, KDE 4.3.5; KMS (Kernel Mode-Setting) is now enabled by default for Intel and Radeon cards; PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) is now part of the base system; introduced devtmpfs – you can now exclude /dev from backups, along with /proc and /sys; upgraded KDE (and related) packages to the 4.x branch….
