The Mandriva team is proud to announce the first alpha release of 2010.1. Many improvements and new functionalities are planned for this new version – your desktop will be smart and connected. You will also find easy home encryption so that your personal data are secure wherever you are. Also planned is work on our tools to manage software installation and updates to give more useful information and help user to choose the best software. Desktop environments are also part of our main focus. Finally, work is also in progress to add cloud functionalities in your favorite desktop.

The Elive Team is proud to announce the release of the development version 1.9.56. Changes: 3G phones – more than 300 new operators added; Internet module – if you connect with a 3G phone, the configuration will be saved and you can set it to automatically connect at boot; Icedove – when installing Icedove, it contains by default a very nice-looking Elive-style template; Flash updated to version 10.0.42.34; installer – some fixes regarding the boot of Windows systems; Linux kernel version 2.6.30. Note that this is a development version.

On behalf of the Nexenta project, I’d like to announce the availability of Nexenta Core Platform (NCP) 3.0 alpha 3. This is the third release in NCP3 cycle. The main changes over the alpha 2 release include: move from OpenSolaris b129 to b130; many additional network drivers; nexenta-on-source changes. From the release of NCP3, all sunw* packages are natively built on Nexenta. The complete sources are available in the repository, along with Sun Studio 12 and other tools to roll your own kernel.
With the beginning of this new year it’s time for a new release. With the release of Toorox 01.2010 you can get a 64-bit edition, too. It contains the 2.6.32 kernel and the KDE was updated to version 4.3.4. The Toorox installer is now able to set up your /home folder on another partition and you can install the bootloader into a single partition or a floppy disk. There’s a new entry in Systemconfig – Mobile Broadband, where you can configure your mobile UMTS connection and bring it up. All packages for a PPTP VPN connection were included and you can configure it via NetworkManager and the nm applet. KFTPgrabber was replaced with gFTP and there is a new audio mixer – mixxx.
SimplyMEPIS 8.4.96, the beta4 of MEPIS 8.5, is available from MEPIS and public mirrors. Warren said: ‘Even though the past two weeks were a holiday time, we have been busy. In this beta I did a lot work on the look and feel of the KDE 4 desktop. There have been many suggestions and contributions from the community, but in the end, someone had to make some decisions and integrate it all together. This took a lot of time. It isn’t final, but I think it’s very close. Otherwise, Firefox was updated to version 3.5.6.’
The Unity Linux project is pleased to announce its second beta release, 2010 Beta 2. We have taken the last four weeks to provide many needed fixes and continual updates to the core offering of our software. Changelog: updated X.Org Server to 1.7.3; fixed Aufs for GVFS support; new kernel version 2.6.31.9; additional firmware; NDISwrapper module is fixed and working with kernels 2.6.30 and higher; overall there are about 200 updates since beta 1. Known issues: RPM 5 filetriggers feature is not fixed yet; X.Org Server 1.7.3 is not yet supported by the ATI proprietary driver….

The PC-BSD team is pleased to announce the availability of PC-BSD 8.0-BETA, running FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE, and KDE 4.3.4. Version 8.0 contains a number of enhancements and improvements. Some of the notable changes are: brand new system installer, allows the install of PC-BSD or FreeBSD; run in live mode directly from DVD; updated software manager, allows browsing and installing applications directly; support for 3D acceleration with NVIDIA drivers on amd64. Version 8.0-BETA of PC-BSD is available for download from our mirrors. Also, our Pootle translation page has been updated with the latest strings.
