On behalf of the Nexenta project, I’d like to announce the availability of the Nexenta Core Platform (NCP) 3.0 alpha 2. This is the second release in NCP3. The main changes over the Alpha1 release include: move from Opensolaris b124 to b129, this brings the long awaited ZFS deduplication support to the distribution; many additional network drivers; nexenta-on-source changes. From the release of NCP3 on, all sunw* packages are natively built on Nexenta. The complete sources are available in the repository, along with Sun Studio 12 and other tools to roll your own kernel.
The rapid response of the Debian KDE team made it possible for us to recompile KDE 4.3.4 in time for this beta. And we were able to fix the perpetually problematic Python toolchain well enough that system-config-printer finally works. Also there have been numerous suggestions from the community; some are included now, and some will be in the next beta. The MEPIS artistic team made some tweaks to the theme graphics. To also improve the look, mepis-init has been changed to default to 24-bit depth display for most modern graphics drivers. We’re being cautious about this change, since we don’t want to make things worse for users with older graphics chips.
The big difference with this release is using i686 builds instead of i486. This means that Webconverger will not boot on very old PCs and some cheap CPUs like Geode. If this is problem for you, let me know! For the rest of us with i686-compatible hardware, Webconverger should be a litter faster. In other news, the spelling from the previous release 5.7 with Firefox 3.5 should now be working for you. The CJK support might not quite work on these free images; however, if you purchase Webconverger with Chinese (or Korean or Japanese) support I will ensure all the relevant fonts and input tools are pre-installed.
Enlightenment 17 modules – a new set of Enlightenment 17 modules for Elive, they are found in the features category of the Enlightenment 17 Preferences; Trayer moved to the system tray of Enlightenment 17; Bluetooth featured on the fly; power manager featured for laptops; MSN – aMSN replaced by emesene for now due to resources and stability reasons; Linux kernel version 2.6.30. Note that this is a development version.
